Our Why
Mission & Vision
There seems to be a lot of dissatisfaction among people in the Christian community. This tends to take the form of a serious question with regard to their faith: “Is this really all there is?”
- Many Christians seem to intuitively understand that more is promised to them as followers of Jesus than they are currently experiencing. This makes them feel that there is something spiritually wrong with them, that there is something profound that is missing in their spiritual lives, even though they may have a hard time verbalizing exactly what that something is.
- They sing about many wonderful things in worship songs, but the songs ring hollow, with all those wonderful things seeming like ideals that are out of reach for “normal” Christians. These include things like the ability to have victory over sin, having a sense of God’s presence, and a possessing a consistent sense of joy and peace.
- They feel like their prayer life is shallow and ineffective, and that their relationship with God is more like a mental concept that they try to hold onto than a real relationship.
- They also feel unable to really understand the Bible. It is a big book, it looks strange with its chapter and verse divisions, and it contains a lot of unfamiliar words. This makes them feel that it is so far above their heads that there is no way that they can really read and understand it themselves.
All this has led to a palpable spiritual malaise in the Church, with many people either deciding to accept what they currently have as “normal Christianity”, or worse, to just drop out and find their satisfaction in something “real”.
My Mission
In view of this, my mission is to help people from all walks of life, specifically Christians from all denominations, as well as seekers who want to learn more about God, the Bible, and how to live in the kingdom of God as a here and now reality, to know and understand the Bible better. This includes not only its historical and theological teachings, but what all those things mean to them were they are right now. I want to help them to experience a real, deep, and satisfying relationship with God, and to become people who speak with God not as a ritual, but as a conversation. And as they learn and grow in their knowledge, I also want to help them to experience everything that is promised to them as a person who is part of God’s kingdom, and ultimately, to become mature disciples of Jesus.
Vision
God doesn’t just want a Church in the world that bears His name. He wants a Church that is composed of people from all walks of life who will actively live in relationship with Him, not just on Sundays, but every day of the week. He wants a Church that is composed of people who live and work in genuine holiness so that they are able to live and work in His presence and His power. He wants a Church composed of people who are not only transformed, but transformative in their impact on society. And the work He has called me to do can contribute to those goals.
I accomplish this through the written word:
- Continue to publish and promote the verse-by-verse “When We Listen” Commentaries.
- Publish and promote theology books written in a popular and easily accessible style.
- Continue to write and publish the When We Listen blog several times each week.
- Respond to posts on X from a biblical position.
- Write guest columns in newspapers and magazines.
I also accomplish this through verbal and interpersonal methods:
- Involvement in community groups where I can use the public forum to create opportunities for one-on-one and small group conversations about “all things God”.
- Public speaking on topics relating to the Bible, spiritual realities, spiritual growth, and biblical theological principles.
- Weekly podcasts and Instagram posts.
