Listen with Me

Having given the list of the descendants of Esau for the next several generations, God had Moses write out a list of the leaders of the people who were already in the land to which Esau and his descendants moved. These were the descendants of Seir. God also had him include the names of the kings in the area for several generations.

Whereas God had given the land of Canaan to the receiver of the promise down through Jacob, and then to all his sons and their descendants, the reminder of the descendants of Abraham had to settle their own lands outside Canaan. Some did this through warfare, and some by simply settling into the new areas and intermarrying and making treaties with those who were already living there.

Even though God did not give Canaan to Esau and his descendants, he still became a significant nation and ended up peopling a large territory. This was done for him to fulfill the promise God had made to Abraham, that he would become the father of many nations (Genesis 17:4-6). Ultimately, even Esau himself had to acknowledge that God had blessed him with much (Genesis 33:9). God always keeps His promises, even if He doesn’t do it exactly as one might think or prefer.

Pray with Me

Father, You surely do keep every promise. And I can testify that, even though some of Your promises to me have been fulfilled in unexpected ways, looking back it is evident that You have always been perfectly faithful. Help me, Lord, to be as faithful in keeping my own promises, so that I can reflect Your faithfulness to everyone around me. Amen.
