Isaiah 40:6-8 (NIV):  A voice says, “Cry out.” And I said, “What shall I cry?” “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field.  The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass.  The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.”

The strongest, mightiest, most influential people, the ones others admire, respect, and stand in awe of, even the ones that they fear, are, after all, only human, and will one day be laid to rest in the dust of the earth.  If the mighty one was good, people mourn them when they pass.  If they were evil, they rejoice when they are gone, even if they must do it secretly.  But no matter how good or evil a person is, they will eventually die, at least from this world.  But God’s word stands firm – His promises endure and never fail.  Through the ages, many have tried to destroy the Bible, to throw doubt on the credibility and authenticity of God’s word, and they have failed.  God’s word is eternal.  Theodore Beza’s words regarding the Church apply to the word of God as well:  it is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.  There has always been, and will always be, a remnant that God preserves, in whose hearts God’s word is enshrined, believed, trusted, and protected.  His word will never fail, and can never be destroyed, because God Himself is the one who protects and defends it.  (Be afraid, all you tyrants!  It is not mere men whom you stand against when you attack God’s word; it is God Himself!)

Father, thank You for the stability of Your word, firmly established in your own steadfastness.  Help me to walk in that assurance today and every day.  Amen.
